The Home Ruler le Catherine McEvoy ag #4 ar Liosta Ceol Traidisiúnta 2008 ag Earle Hitchner. Born in Birmingham, England, to parents from Roscommon, current Meath resident Catherine McEvoy infuses plenty of soul into the close-to-breath music she plays on her second solo album. (Her solo debut was released in 1996). McEvoy's fluid, rhythmic, rollornamented, beautifully phrased and paced flute work is rooted in the Sligo-Roscommon style, yet there's a sweet surrender in the subtle whirlpool she swirls especially in reels, which make up 19 of the album's 30 tunes. Her playing proves that freshness and liveliness need not rely on wildness and velocity. Earle Hitchner, Echo Nation, Irish Echo, 21-27 Eanáir 2009 Tá cáil ar Chatherine McEvoy mar dhuine de na ceoltóirí is fearr ar an bhfeadóg mhór atá ag seinm i stíl Ros Comáin - Shligigh agus is cinnte go gcuirfidh an t-albam seo uaithi, a tríú halbam, tuilleadh lena cáil. Sa réamhrá don albam, tugann an fidléir clúiteach Séamus Connolly suntas don luas deas réidh atá faoin gceol seo, rud a chuireann i gcuimhne dó ré ina raibh níos mó grástúlachta agus níos lú deifre le sonrú sa cheol traidisiúnta. Molann sé brí, anamúlacht agus sainiúlacht an cheoil, tréithe a chuireann máistreacht an cheoltóra in iúl dúinn dar leis. Tá éagsúlacht dheas sna foinn atá le cloisteáil ar The Home Ruler, iad seinnte ar fheadóga móra i ngléasanna D, Eb agus C, fonn mall álainn san áireamh, ‘Bánchnoic Éireann Ó'. Ceoltóirí den scoth atá i mbun tionlacain, leis - Paddy McEvoy (nia le Catherine), Felix Dolan, Geraldine Cotter, Steve Cooney agus Joe Kennedy. Catherine McEvoy is considered one of the best exponents of the Sligo - Roscommon style of flute playing and this, her third album, will do much to confirm her reputation as one of the most talented flute players in the country. In his introduction to the CD the renowned fiddler Séamus Connolly describes Catherine's playing as bringing us ‘back to a time when music was played more slowly, more gracefully and less frantically. Catherine's playing has a lift that is exciting, colourful and electrifying, coupled with unexpected variations, lovely tempo and phrasing. It is here that we truly have a master at work'. Catherine treats the listener to a wonderfully varied selection of music on The Home Ruler played on D, Eb and C flutes, including the beautiful slow air ‘Bánchnoic Éireann Ó'. She is accompanied by a talented panel of musicians including her nephew Paddy McEvoy, the legendary Felix Dolan, Geraldine Cotter, Steve Cooney and Joe Kennedy. |
