SÁRÚ

Saving the world is a tough game …

Shortlisted for the Réics Carló Award 2018 the Oireachtas na Gaeilge literary award for young people's fiction.

Mystery, bullying threats and huge global problems – they’re the challenges to be faced in this new story for readers aged 11 to 15 years by the award-winning author, Anna Heussaff. SÁRÚ is suitable as a classroom reader and includes a helpful glossary at the back of the book.

SÁRÚ is Anna Heussaff’s third novel for young readers, with the same lead characters as Vortex (Cois Life, 2006) and Hóng (Cló Iar-Chonnacht, 2012), which won the Childrens Books Ireland Special Judges Award in 2013.

In SÁRÚ , as in the other stories, real-life dangers get mixed up with a computer game that goes wrong. This time, Evan and his friend Rio are playing the brand new game SÁRÚ on a smartwatch. But will Crúb and his bullyboys stop them before they can save the world in the game? And whose side is Cara on – the girl who never laughs? Síofra, Evan’s sister, is far more worried about climate change in the real world than online, and just as Evan and Rio’s troubles mount, a disastrous storm hits their town.

A review of Anna Heussaff's book 'SÁRÚ'Léirmheas ar 'SÁRÚ' le Anna Heussaff

Leanann an leabhar seo eachtraí roinnt carachtar ar bhuaileamar leo i leabhair eile de chuid Anna Heussaff: Evan, Rio agus Síofra. Mar a tharla sa leabhar HÓNG agus VORTEX, ní mór do na carachtair óga seo dul i ngleic le fadhbanna teicneolaíochta agus timpeallachta atá ag bagairt ar an saol comhaimseartha. is léir go bhfuil spéis ag an údar féin sna réimsí seo agus éiríonn léi a dtábhacht i saol an duine óig a léiriú ar bhealach éifeachtach.

Focal gearr atá mar theideal ar an leabhar - SÁRÚ - mar a bhí i gceist le HÓNG, agus é litrithe i mbloclitreacha, ach tuigimid ón mblurba thíos faoi, agus go deimhin ón strainc atá ar aghaidheanna na gcarachtar ar an gclúdach, gur focal cumhachtach atá ann. Aithneoidh léitheoirí cló agus dathanna an chlúdaigh agus a chosúla is atá sé leis an gclúdach don leabhar HÓNG. Rogha chliste is ea an dath dearg a chur ar an gclúdach - tá nasc déanta le clúdach an leabhair eile ar ndóigh - ach bundath atá ann a fhógraíonn an baol atá os comhair na ndaoine óga. Idir an tintreach agus an bháisteach throm atá ag clagarnach ar an bhfuinneog, agus lámh bhagartha ag iarraidh greim a bhreith ar an uaireadóir, dealraíonn sé go bhfuil rud éigin thar a bheith speisialta agus scanrúil faoin uaireadóir seo a bhfuil oiread sin éilimh air. Feicimid íomhá den uaireadóir cliste seo ag tús gach caibidle agus is é an cluiche atá ar an uaireadóir a cheanglaíonn le chéile eachtraí an leabhair. Briste ina sé chaibidil déag, tá blúiríní beaga aicsin mar chroílár gach coda.

[original review appeared in Irish]: SÁRÚ is a new novel by Anna Heussaff for readers between 11 and 15 years of age. She is an author who has won many awards and this book is her third in this series. It is suitable for children with a high-level of spoken Irish in 6th class and over, but it could also suit 5th class in a Gaelscoil or Gaeltacht school. The book includes a vocabulary glossary at the back which will be useful for teachers and students. The story centres on Even, his friend Rio and his personal computer game on his smartwatch. Themes in the book include many current topics which can be used to kickstart conversation in the classroom! It is well-written but it is a challenging read for senior primary school students.
