"Bunleabhar é seo agus beidh fáilte mhór roimh an athchló seo ag duine ar bith a bhfuil suim aige in amhráin an Tuaiscirt. Tá amhráin Thír Chonaill ann agus tá cuid oirthear na cúige ann fosta, amhráin a cruinníodh nuair a bhí ceoltóirí a fuair le dúchas iad á gcanstan i gcónaí" Lillis Ó Laoire.
FANS of traditional music in Ulster were treated this weekend as a collection of traditional songs of Ulster was launched in Letterkenny.
The book Songs of Ulster (Amhráin Chúige Uladh) is a collection of traditional songs collected in the early years of the 20th century and published in the 1930s originally.
This new edition has been edited by author and music researcher Colm Ó Baoill and was launched by Gortahork native, academic and sean-nós singer Dr Lillis Ó Laoire, a lecturer in the National University of Ireland, Galway and an expert on the sean-nós tradition.
The book is the only collection of its kind of the traditional Irish songs of Ulster and fans of the tradition will be delighted to see it back in print.
The launch was as part of the big Oireachtas na Smhna festival which took place in Letterkenny this weekend.
Songs of Ulster was just one of the works launched by Cló Iar-Chonnacht publishers on Friday. Fans of traditional music were also able to buy a discounted version of its Duitse a Bheirim Grá, the first CD by traditional sean-nós singer, Síle Ní Fhlaithearta which was officially launched on the evening by well-known broadcaster with RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, Meaití Joe Shéamuis Ó Flatharta. The album also features Síle’s husband, well-known musician/composer Charlie Lennon and their family.
