Tá an tAthair Séamas Ó Conacháin go mór faoi bhrú. Tá seanchara leis, an tAthair Micheál Ó Ruairc, saor i ndiaidh téarma príosúntachta a gearradh air de bharr éigniú gasúir, agus tá ordú tagtha ón Easpag go bhfuil sé le fanacht le Séamas i dteach an tsagairt. Is deacair do Shéamas a dhímheas ar a sheanchara a cheilt, ach ar mhaithe leis féin sin a chaithfidh sé a dhéanamh, mar má sceitear an rún beidh deireadh leis. Ní mó ná sásta atá Ó Ruairc faoin socrú seo ach oiread agus fios maith aige nach fáilte atá roimhe, ach níl an dara rogha aige. Is beag a shíleann muintir an pharóiste go bhfuil a leithéid ina chónaí ina measc, agus go deimhin is é an rud is mó atá ag déanamh imní do Mharcas Mac Cába, Caitliceach diaganta dílis, an easpa measa ag meáin na tíre ar an Eaglais. Tá an chuma ar Bill agus Sharon de Brún go bhfuil siad sásta go maith le chéile agus iad ag tógáil a mic, Liam, ach ní mar a síltear a bítear agus tá Bill i mbun caidrimh le hAoife, bean chéile Adam, cara leis. Ar éigean is féidir leis an mbeirt acu srian a choinneáil orthu féin agus iad beag beann ar dhiscréid a thuilleadh. An iliomad rún - an iliomad ag brath orthu.

Fr Séamas Ó Conacháin, the local parish priest, is doing his best under difficult circumstances. His old friend Fr Micheál Ó Ruairc, recently released from prison after serving time for paedophile offences, is staying with him on instruction from the bishop. Ó Conacháin must deal with his distaste for Ó Ruairc's behaviour while also protecting his own reputation by protecting Ó Ruairc's secret. His loyal parishioners suspect nothing, least of all Marcas Mac Cába, a devout, traditional Catholic, whose main preoccupation is the disparaging attitude of the media in this country towards religion. Bill and Sharon de Brún and their son Liam seem like a happy family and regularly attend mass; however all is not as it seems. Bill is having an affair with Aoife, his best friend's wife, and as the affair progresses their secret meetings become more and more daring. Meanwhile, Fr Ó Ruairc knows only too well that he is an unwelcome guest in Ó Conacháin's house but he has little choice but to make the most of the situation and to abide by the conditions laid down by his host. So many secrets cannot hope to stay secret for long.
