This collection was first published in 1967, fourteen years after Máirtín Ó Cadhain published Cois Caoláire. He had spent the subsequent years involved in community organising for various civil rights causes, in lobbying and in protests. It was also during this time that Ó Cadhain matured as a writer: from this point onwards he would focus his attention on the city and urban communities instead of a rural setting and the Gaeltacht. His attention also moved to men as main characters instead of women. This book was awarded the Irish American Cultural Institute's literary award in the year of its original publication.
