A total re-evaluation of Cumann Buan-Choimeádta na Gaeilge (SPIL - The Society for the Preservation of the Irish Language), which laid the foundations for the 20th century language Revival. Its influence on the general public and in particular on the state system is examined. Few organisations have been as misunderstood as SPIL but with his examination and dispassionate analysis of previously unused sources Professor Ó Murchú comes to a radically new position. This volume is particularly well suited to the Lúb ar Phár (’re-vision’) series as it corrects ar widely-held view which was totally at odds with the facts.
Máirtín Ó Murchú is Senior Professor of Irish in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, former Director of the School of Celtic Studies there, and a former Professor of Irish at Trinity College Dublin.
