‘Kerry author’s inspiring another new generation’, The Kingdom, 8 September, 2009

KERRY author Mícheál Ó Ruairc will attempt to guide an inspire a whole new generation of writer with new book Na Lucha ag Rince.

It is designed to help Leaving Cert students and it give practical guidelines to improve their writing skills for the creative writing element of the Irish exam.

“The days of our youth are the days of imagination,” says author and educator Ó Ruairc.

“There aren’t many opportunities for students to use their imagination and creativity in an exam situation but there is one small window.

“Students are asked to write a story based on a phrase or a proverb. It’s the one opportunity they get to express their creativity without having to rely on facts and figures to back them up,” he added.

Originally from Cloghane Brandon on the Dingle Peninsula, Ó Ruairc has lived in Dublin for a number of years and he has dedicated much of his life to writing and teaching and is currently working as a part-time teacher in the Educational Institue in Dublin.

He has published three collections of poetry to date as well as nine novels. His first collection of short stories for adults, Daoine a Itheann Daoine, is due for publication in the coming month.

Comhairle do scríbhneoirí óga SAOL, Deireadh Fómhair, 2009, Colm Ó Torna

Tá cara sa gcúirt ag scoláirí idirbhliana agus ardteiste i mbliana i Mícheál Ó Ruairc, údar an leabhair nua Na Lucha ag Rince atá foilsithe ag Cló Iar-Chonnacht (www.cic.ie).

Bailiúchán de ghearrscéalta atá ann ina bhfuil comhairle tugtha freisin do scoláirí ag tabhairt faoin gceist cheapadóireachta ar an scrúdú ardléibhéil i nGaeilge. Tá cuid mhór dá shaol caite ag Mícheál i mbun scríbhneoireachta agus le cúrsaí oideachais agus tugann an leabhar nua seo an taithí sin le chéile ar bhealach atá soiléir agus soléite. As Contae Chiarraí ó dhú¸has do Mhícheál, ach tá cónaí air le fada i mBaile Átha Cliath agus é ag leachtóireacht go páirt-aimseartha in Institiúd Oideachais Bhaile Átha Cliath faoi láthair. Is beag deis atá ag scoláirí úsáid a bhaint as féith na samhlaíochta taobh istigh den chóras oideachais dar le Micheál, ach tá an cheist cheapadóireachta ar cheann den bheagán deiseanna atá ag an scoláire a bheith cruthaitheach. “Deirfiú don tsamhlaíocht í an óige,” a deir Mícheál. “Is iad laethanta na hóige laethanta na samhlaíochta. ‘Bíonn an óige aislingeach’ de réir an tseanfhocail agus is ionan a bheith aislingeach agus a bheith ídéalach agus samhlaíoch.”

Trí leid le scileanna scríbhneoireachta a fhorbairt.

1. Bíodh an plota agus na príomh-eachtraí forbartha san intinn sula dtosaítear ag scríobh.
2. ‘Tús maith leath na hoibre’ – faigh greim ar an léitheoir ag túß an scéil le tús láidir lán d’eachtraíocht.
3. Cruthaigh príomcharactar amháin ar a laghad – ach, ná téigh thar bheirt nó triúr phríomhcharachtairí.
