An Tower Traditional Irish Music on Accordion and Flute ›
Tommy Mellett (known locally as Tommy Tom Sheáinín Ó Méalóid) was born and raised in an Claí Nua, Camas Uachtair, Co. Galway. His interest in music started while he was a youngster, of about seven years old. His uncle, Seán Ó Méalóid, gave him the gift of a Hohner accordion and that was the instrument on which he learned his first notes. He learned music from his father Tom Sheáinín and his uncle Colm Sheáinín and from a neighbour who lived across the bay in Ros Muc, Mick Bheartla Bhreathnaigh from Snámh Bó. After that, he learned a lot of music by ear through listening to the programme Ceolta Tíre on Raidió Éireann. He emigrated to America and lived for fourteen years in Boston, but he didn't play much music while he was living in America. He, his wife, Josie and their young family moved back to Camas in 1979 and they have lived there ever since. He has been an avid musician since his return to Ireland.
